AI has come to Umbraco

Umbraco has released its own AI packages. They give editors AI where they already work and let you decide the model, the rules and the bill. We have tried them out.

AI has come to Umbraco, and it has come in a way we like.

Instead of building one particular AI into the core, Umbraco has made Umbraco.AI, an open source foundation you opt into. On top of it sit modules for prompts on fields, agents, Copilot in the backoffice, semantic search and automation. Umbraco calls the approach AI, intentionally. You decide whether and where AI is used, which model answers, and you only pay for what you use. That can be OpenAI, European providers such as Mistral and Scaleway, or your own models on your own servers.

What does it mean for editors?

The biggest difference is that AI is no longer another window. An editor can get a suggested meta description right next to the field or ask Copilot to find typos on the page. Everything lands as a draft, and permissions, history and approvals work as always. The film above shows what it looks like in practice.

We have tried it out

We have set up the packages in an Umbraco 18 demo with a made-up cultural centre and tried them on the things editors actually spend time on. In the example you can see:

  • how SEO copy is written in one click and stays under 155 characters
  • how an image field gets an image that fits the page
  • how Copilot finds and fixes typos in a draft
  • how search understands a question like “what can we do with the kids at the weekend if it rains?”
  • and what it costs in kroner when a mid-sized organisation with editors spread across the business starts using it
